The smash-hit musical A Beautiful Noise: The Neil Diamond Musical will make its Australian premiere exclusively in Melbourne in August 2026 at The Princess Theatre with acclaimed Broadway star Will Swenson, who originated the role of Neil Diamond on Broadway, leading the cast.
Will Swenson on ‘A Beautiful Noise: The Neil Diamond Musical’:
“We all know Neil, the performer, pretty well. The beauty of this show is Neil wanted to tell it in a very personal way. It opens up Neil’s story. It’s created structurally really creatively. There are actually two characters that play Neil in the show. I play the younger version, who you get to see perform and go through the years of his storied career. And then there is a modern-day Neil Diamond, who’s the age of Neil now, and he’s looking back on his life through the lens of a therapist. So, it’s a great examination of a life.
It asks the deep questions:
‘What completes you?’ ‘What do you identify with?’ ‘What is that piece of you that is unique to you?’ ‘What couldn’t you live without?’ and ‘if that piece of you that you love the most was taken away, would you still be enough?’
It’s common knowledge that Neil has been diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease, and can no longer perform, so it’s reckoning with that and looking back on a life: [the] glorying in some of it and regretting some of it. So, it’s a deep night, much more than just a fantastic concert. We have lots of lights and sequins and rock and roll, but it also is a very moving piece of theatre.”
Will Swenson on meeting Neil Diamond the first time:
“The first time I met Neil was the most nervous I’ve ever been in my life. Neil had been working with the writer to get this idea down that Neil wanted. So the writer came up with this idea, and they finally had a script and a sequence of songs, and the idea was to get in a room with a bunch of actors and perform it for Neil to see if Neil said, ‘yeah, let’s do it or no, let’s not do it.’
So, we spent a week getting this show ready, and there were maybe 10 actors. I was playing Neil then and on the last day in this tiny rehearsal studio in New York City, in walks Neil, his wife Katie, and maybe two other people. 10 actors and a director, we performed this thing in front of Neil Diamond, and Neil was not 10 feet away from me, and I was acting as Neil Diamond, performing Neil Diamond songs in front of Neil Diamond. I think I blacked out for most of it.
That’s the first time I met Neil. He was great [and] lovely. We were all petrified that he wouldn’t like it. For the beginning of the show, he sat with his eyes closed, and we were like, ‘oh, he hates it.’ We went through the big opening number, America, which is a big rock and roll number, and he started nodding his head. The opening number ended [and] slowly he put his hands up. Like, ‘yeah, we got him.’ So that was exciting and terrifying throughout the process.”
Will Swenson on how Neil Diamond helped how he approached the role:
“Neil was very involved with the development of the show, so I had the insane privilege of getting to be mentored by the man himself.
There’s always a danger that either you’ll insult the person that you’re performing, or that you won’t get it right [but] Neil is the loveliest man and guided with love, and interesting anecdotes.
The [note] that stands out to me the most, as far as how to shape the role, is, in the second act when Neil’s personal life is falling apart, he’s finding solace in the music, but he’s running away from home to be part of the road, the tour and the music, because that was what fulfilled him. It’s this feverish montage of all his concerts, and it’s stunning visually.
In my head, I thought ‘I’m running away from this life that’s not working’, and I was feverishly, angrily churning away at these songs. One day Neil said, ‘yeah, there’s a fever to it, but that’s where the joy was. Tell my story with joy.’ That was the biggest note that I heard from Neil. It changed my track on how I was going to do it.
Like it meant so much to him, but it wasn’t an angry fever, it was home, because on stage and music is his home.”
