Dirty Dancing, the Musical

DSC01129

I had the pleasure of attending the Opening Night of Dirty Dancing in Melbourne. This included the Media Launch (preview performance for photo/video ops, interviews etc) in the morning, followed by the Pink Carpet Arrivals that afternoon and the show that evening.

I will be doing a write up of some interesting bits and pieces from the Media Launch, but first, here is my little write up of my thoughts and feelings towards the show =D Under the cut, of course!

Strictly Ballroom The Musical

DSC01005

Thanks to Nuffnang, I was able to go see Strictly Ballroom the Musical last Tuesday. I was not too familiar with the story. I own the Red Carpet Trilogy Boxset DVD (comes with Moulin Rouge and Romeo & Juliet) but I’d only watched Strictly Ballroom once, and it was a long time ago at best. Not that that mattered too much – I usually like going into a musical with little idea of where it’s going or what is to happen next.

Some minor spoilers under the cut – but mainly just my own thoughts and feelings.

31/1: I just re-watched the movie and have added some revisions down the bottom.

Strictly Ballroom The Musical Sneak Peek

The cast with Director Baz Luhrmann and Set/Costume Designer Catherine Martin bottom centre.
All photos by me.

If you haven’t seen the numerous posters, the sound of a song in the air or maybe you actually have been living under a rock for quite some time (I hear the rent is cheap this time of year) you would be unaware that Strictly Ballroom the Musical has landed in Melbourne. But in all seriousness, shame on you.

Based on Baz Luhrmann’s 1984 movie of the same name; the story tells of ballroom dancer Scott Hastings (played by Thomas Lacey) and novice Fran (played by Phoebe Panaretos) as they try to dance their way to becoming Pan-Pacific Grand Prix Dancing champions.

Thanks to Nuffnang, a group of bloggers were invited to attend see a three-song preview of the show presented by Baz Luhrmann himself. Details under the cut =D

PLEASE BE AWARE. VERY PHOTO HEAVY.

AN INTERVIEW WITH Colin Dean

Tasmanian performer Colin has been working in the industry for over thirty years. He is currently playing the role of lonely music shop owner Billy in Once, the new musical at the Princess Theatre in Melbourne. I spoke to Colin about dream roles, down time and art imitating life.

You’re a well-rounded performer – from acting on screen, singing and dancing on stage, being a tour guide, stand up comedy, live performances and more. Is there anything you can’t do?

Make a decent curry. How do you get the lumps out?
