Elegies: a song cycle is a show for a very specific theatre goer. It is for the ones who don’t need showiness, rather, those who appreciate the simplicity of engrossing vocalisation and lyricism.

It’s been two days since I saw Opera Australia and GWB Entertainment’s production of Sunset Boulevard, and I’m still conflicted on whether or not I enjoyed it. But, in retrospect, I would like to see it again, and I suppose that’s the greatest compliment of all.

Seasoned performers Lucy Durack and Penny McNamee play the exuberant Pigeon sisters Cecily and Gwendolyn, while John Batcherlor (Roy), Laurence Coy (Speed), Jamie Oxenbould (Vinnie) and Anthony Taufa (Murray) round out the talented cast as Oscar’s poker loving friends.

There’s certainly one thing audiences will remember above all else from this incredible production – the incredible horse puppets which are simply astounding. But even though the horses are the undisputed stars of the show, the emotional core of this wartime story is still strong and this is an incredibly emotional production that that most people will shed a tear to while viewing.

Following the successes of Beauty and the Beast in 2017 and Dumbo earlier this year (and with ten other titles scheduled for release until 2020); Aladdin is the newest film to receive the live action treatment.
Tribute acts have always had a bit of a stigma attached to them by some members of the public. While tribute artists make up a huge sub-section of the music industry, there are still some audiences who refuse to see a tribute show, as if attending a concert by such a performer is to somehow besmirch the reputation of the real artist they’re honouring.
