2012’s The Avengers was a near-perfect superhero film. It seemed like an impossible premise to pull off – combining many different superhero characters into one story, and having to give them all equal and fair screentime, and at the same time tell an engaging story that feels bigger and better than any of those characters’ respective stand-alone movies.

Danny Elfman – Music from the Films of Tim Burton Concert

I first discovered the music of film composer Danny Elfman back in 1986, when watching the cult classic Pee-wee’s Big Adventure on VHS one day. It was Elfman’s first film as a composer, having previously been lead singer of the new wave band Oingo Boingo. Tim Burton, who was also making his film debut with the movie, was a fan of the band and frequented many of their concerts in LA, and decided Elfman would be the perfect choice to score his movie. Despite having no experience in film music, he produced a unique, completely revolutionary score and in the process created a completely new approach to scoring films.

Cut to 30 years later and Elfman is now regarded as one of the best and most influential composers in Hollywood history, still working steadily today, with the 2015 releases 50 Shades of Grey and The Avengers: Age of Ultron on his list of credits this year.

Opinion: Disney’s ‘The Little Mermaid’ (1989)

When I was young I fell in love with the story of a vibrant and rebellious young mermaid whose free spirit and trusting nature led her to find her true love and her happy ever after (with a lot of help from her loyal and resourceful friends Sebastian, Flounder and Scuttle).

Now that I am older I recently re-watched The Little Mermaid and found the childhood love I had felt and my sense of wonder and belief had been replaced. Where once I had unwavering acceptance of the storyline and encouragement for Ariel and her plight to be free I now had nagging questions about the plot and a running commentary in my head about random little details I had never cared about before.
