An Interview with Leanne Tennant

Cairns singer-songwriter, Leanne Tennant has been singing professionally on and off for around fifteen years. The 2015 Queensland Music Award Winner for best ‘Blues & Roots’ artist, and 2016 Billy Thorpe Scholarship finalist, is currently on tour with her new album, Red Wine, Late Nights.

Where does the name Red Wine, Late Nights stem from?

I think the type of work I created on this last album is suitable for late nights and red wine.  A few of the songs were brainstormed over a bottle of Shiraz. Red, over White, yes [is my drink of choice].

I work with a great photographer called Matt Loncar.  We did a shoot in the Princess Theatre in Brisbane and felt the vibe suits the sound of the album [so used it for the cover].

Flashback Friday: Now and Then (1995)

One of my childhood favourites Now and Then follows the story of four girls who made a pact years ago to be there for each other for the important stuff no matter what. The story opens with Chrissy (Rita Wilson) heavily pregnant with her first child and due to go into labour any day. If you think that is scary enough, check out her pregnancy look. Yowsers, the floral dress and hair, oh my.

My Favourite Five: Drew Barrymore Movies

With so many funny and sweet movies to choose from it was hard to narrow this list down to just five. I decided the only way I could trim the list would be to exclude the movies she did as a child actor. Sorry ET and Fire Starter fans but they won’t be in this list. Here are five of my favourite Drew Barrymore movies. I could easily have listed more.

Binge-Worthy Series: Jessica Jones

“New York may be the city that never sleeps, but it sure does sleep around. Not that I’m complaining, cheaters are good for business.” – Jessica Jones

I’ve never been into comic books but I’ve always been into superheros whether it be Sailormoon, Captain Planet, The Power Rangers or The Avengers. I’ve always enjoyed the idea of extraordinary people standing out, often as an outcast,  doing courageous and remarkable things. Usually for the greater good or out of love for someone or something.

That’s probably why Jessica Jones caught my interest. The tough, sassy anti-hero on a quest for redemption may have been done a thousand times before but boy does Jessica do it well.

My Favourite Five: Jessica Chastain Roles

I’m one of the many people who confuse Jessica Chastain with Bryce Dallas-Howard. Now that I know who she is and have seen more of her movies I can see the differences a little more and am definitely a Chastain fan. Here are five roles I think she shines in:

Thoughts on Spy (2015)

I know some of you are probably thinking “Ugh a Melissa McCarthy movie, great” and rolling your eyes. Let’s face it, you either like her movies or you don’t.  She tends to take jokes a bit too far (and into really bizarre and crude places) but, overall, I enjoy her movies. Even if she does get a little type cast in stereotypical roles.

When I saw the trailer for Spy I was interested in seeing it but also a little indifferent. If you go by the trailer alone it seems over the top, completely ridiculous and stereotypical. And it is. But it works. And there’s so much more to it than just the trailer.
